Teachers' Day

June 29-July 3 2020 sees the 10th International Conference of the Society of the Study for the Crusades and the Latin East (SSCLE). This will be held at Royal Holloway – the first time the meeting has taken place in the UK since 1983.

We are delighted to be hosting this prestigious gathering of over 150 of the world’s leading historians of the crusades and experts on the Islamic world, Byzantium and other related disciplines. To make the most of this unique event we will be hosting a special afternoon for school and college teachers on Monday, 29 June 2020.

We have invited four speakers of international standing whose expertise aligns closely with the content and interests of school curricula.

Professor Carole Hillenbrand (St Andrews) - the Islamic Near East
Professor Tom Madden (St Louis) - the Fourth Crusade
Dr Natasha Hodgson (Nottingham Trent) - Women and Gender
Professor Ronnie Ellenblum (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) - both Climate Change and Frankish Castles

Each will give a presentation (some as a lecture, others as an interview) and there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions as well.

The formal SSCLE conference will begin with a plenary lecture shortly after the teachers’ event ends and you are warmly invited to join us for this and the following reception at no cost.

This represents a tremendous content-driven CPD opportunity for those engaged in teaching the crusades, and we very much hope that you are able to join us.
